A.M. Update: Obama Elementary Building & Remediation Efforts
Good morning, Obama Community,
Thank you to everyone who participated in our community conversation last night. I deeply appreciate your feedback and am working diligently to address it. Here is an update on the building status and environmental remediation efforts underway at our school today, along with an update on a few other items raised in the meeting.
As I shared at the end of last night's discussion, our plan is to return to Obama as soon as it is safe to do so. The earliest that will be is next week, meaning that the building will remain closed until then. In parallel, we are staging Clark Springs to receive scholars in case it is ultimately needed.
Remediation Efforts:
Early Start: Additional remediation operations began at 5 a.m. this morning.
Targeted Operations: Teams actively prioritized the list of specific locations shared by BOES staff members.
Comprehensive Checks: In addition to staff-reported areas, crews began conducting expansive searches throughout the building to ensure complete coverage.
Air Quality & Environmental Controls:
Dehumidification & Cooling: Air conditioning continued to run to cool the facility and maintain its temperature, while the dehumidifier operated continuously. Relative humidity levels across the building were maintained at a healthy 46%–55%.
Air Purification: Negative-ion scrubbers were used to remove the presence of any potential airborne spores.
Additional Completed Work:
Moisture Monitoring: Crews are conducting ongoing moisture checks throughout the facility to identify and address potential moisture intrusion points.
We will continue to keep you informed as work progresses.
Childcare:
We are reaching out to our partners to see what’s possible regarding childcare support this week, and we hope to have an update in my 5:00 pm message.
Enrolling in Other Schools:
We are assessing what’s possible regarding available seats at McClenney, Holton, and Overby and will aim to provide a preliminary update in my 5:00 pm message.
